Costa Food Group consolidates its position in the food industry, offering a whole range of fresh and processed meat products (pork, chicken and turkey)
Grupo Aviserrano is the fourth largest chicken producer in Spain and the second in terms of processed chicken and turkey
Grupo Empresarial Costa is now a shareholder in Grupo Aviserrano, which means the addition of the Avinatur, Jovi Serrano, Paviso Alimentación and Serrano Protein companies to its meat holding company Costa Food Group. This transaction has allowed the group to move into the poultry market and complements the current offer of fresh and semi-processed pork, cold cuts, hams and Iberian pork products, sold under the trademarks Casademont, Villar and La Nuncia.
This new acquisition means Costa has consolidated its position as one of the leading groups in the Spanish meat sector, with 4,000 employees and an expected aggregate turnover of 1,550 million Euros for the 2020 tax year.
Costa Food Group is now a multi-species group, one that is vertically integrated throughout the range of fresh and processed chicken, turkey and pork products. “This is a key factor in making ourselves the supplier par excellence for our clients. We want to be able to offer them a wide range of products whose traceability we can oversee from the outset through to the marketplace, in order to forge partnerships in the medium term”, notes Jorge Costa, CEO of Grupo Empresarial Costa.
Grupo Aviserrano is a leading player in the national fresh and processed chicken and turkey market, with an aggregate turnover of over 315 million Euros and nigh on 1,800 employees. The group comprises: Avinatur, one of the largest integrative poultry companies in Spain specialising in the production of fresh chicken meat; Jovi Serrano, which produces processed and other chicken and turkey products; Paviso Alimentación, a multi-service company in the meat sector specialising in frozen, IQF and cooked processed chicken products; and Serrano Protein, a recently created company that produces functional and soluble proteins from a base production derived from chicken and turkey as its raw material.
This transaction allows Grupo Aviserrano to reinforce its position in the market and to strengthen its business structure to tackle its ambitious strategic plan. This includes making investments to the tune of 50 million Euros in the coming five years, seeing the construction of a new feed factory in Utrera (Seville), an incubator in Morón (Seville) and a major project at its meat processing centre in El Viso del Alcor (Seville), involving the construction of two slaughterhouses, one for chickens and the other for turkeys.
The most vital project in the coming years is bound to be the construction of a meat processing centre in El Viso del Alcor, which will have a capacity of 10,000 chickens/hour and 2,000 turkeys/hous. Aside from creating new quartering rooms, this investment will see an overall expansion of the plant, plus the building of a new processing room and a clean room for slicing.
The El Viso del Alcor facilities currently measure some 25,000m2, which will be expanded to over 50,000m2 within an industrial facility measuring some 120,000m2. In other words, the plant’s production capacity will double so as to provide services for both Avinatur and Jovi Serrano.
The mean production capacity in the new feed factory will be some 250,000 tons/year, while the incubation room should see an annual production of 75 million chicks/year.
Alfonso Serrano, CEO of Grupo Aviserrano, emphasises that “this agreement will enable greater cost efficiency and the achievement of a 500 million Euro turnover within five years. This will include a line of fresh turkey products which will be added soon. What this transaction does is bolster the financial structure of the group, providing greater guarantees for all our ongoing projects, and means even bigger projects can be taken on“.
Grupo Aviserrano will retain its current managent team and board, in addition to its head office in El Viso del Alcor.
