Origins

The story of Costa Food Group is tied to the setting up of Piensos Costa in Fraga (Huesca) in 1966. The business began its activities by buying and selling grain; since then, it has applied models of integration, expansion and growth that have allowed it to strengthen its position as a leader in the domestic and European agribusiness sector.

Today, Grupo Empresarial Costa, which includes the meat-producing holding Costa Food Group, operates in 107 countries and has an annual turnover of €2,000 million.

Costa Food Group is committed to products that are natural from the source, obtained through the group’s process of vertical integration (controlled circular process), which begins with the control of the animal’ feed, the raising of the livestock and the guarantee of food safety across all stages of the process: birth and raising, meatpacking, the transformation and preparation of jam and charcuterie products. Controlling the entire process provides total traceability along the entire value chain, giving it transparency.

  • 1966 – 1977 First steps

The company’s business trajectory began with Piensos Costa, initially defined by the buying and selling of grain and animal feed.

  • 1977 – 1982Integration of livestock

The creation of an innovative, distinctive and unique business model came with the first forays into integrating pig farming. At that time, Piensos Costa began to provide farmers with a coverage of services that produced notable improvements in genetics, as well as reductions in animal mortality and illnesses. A commitment to welfare continues to be very present at the company today, and respect for the environment and animal welfare is a top priority.

  • 1982 – 2000 Expansion and growth model

In the last decades of the 20th century, the group continued to develop the livestock integration model. It also built and acquired its own installations for the production, raising and fattening of suckling pigs.

  • 2000 – 2015 Group consolidation

As the 21st century began, the group consolidated its place as the second-largest pig producer in Spain with four feed factories and more than 600 associated farms in Aragon, Catalonia, Navarre, and Castile-Leon.

  • 2016 – 2017 Integrated circular process

In September 2016, as part of its commitment to developing an integrated circular process, the group acquired Costa Food Meat that is responsible for pork meatpacking. In mid-2017, it acquired Casademont; this company represents the final step of the process, with the transformation, production and sale of traditional Mediterranean charcuterie products.

  • 2019 Acquisition of Processing Centre in Gurb & Embutidos La Nuncia

Embutidos La Nuncia has been producing fresh and semi-processed pork products since 1992.

  • 2020 Acquisition of 50% of Grupo Aviserrano

Costa Food Group is a multi-species group, one that is vertically integrated throughout the range of fresh and processed chicken, turkey and pork products, with the acquisition of 50% of Grupo Aviserrano.
  • 2021 Acquisition of Roler and La Alegría Riojana

The acquisition of both Roler with its wide assortment in the fresh processed meats category and La Alegría Riojana, which specialises in the production of high quality cold meats and cured sausages, increases the Costa Food Group holding’s range of products, allowing it to strengthen its commitment to be closer to the end consumer with products which are natural from the start and respectful to the environment, both in the domestic and international markets.
  • 2022 Juan Luna joins the Costa Food Group holding

The acquisition of Juan Luna strengthens Costa Food Group's position in the pre-packaged food product market and widens its range of ready-to-eat products. It also continues to strengthen the Group's commitment to being closer and closer to the end consumer.
